Welcome to the Adult Literacy and Language Office wiki!
(formerly Adult Basic Education)
You may be asking, “What is a wiki, and why should I care?” Well, a wiki is a collaborative website where members of a larger group can connect anytime to share ideas or resources, post ideas, schedule events or meetings, or to ask questions and get answers from the wiki community. A wiki differs from a traditional website or blog in that it is not a carefully crafted site for casual visitors. Instead, it seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the landscape of the website.
This is our wiki. Exciting, isn’t it?! How we use it is entirely up to us, and its effectiveness is entirely dependent on us. Why? Because a wiki is only as helpful as the members who contribute to it. If no one posts anything on the wiki, it's not only boring, but it's pretty much useless. However, if each of us commits to posting something, even a few sentences (questions, comments, helpful teaching suggestions, lesson plan ideas, links to valuable resources, etc.), it will become a useful teaching and learning tool for us all. Our wiki will help us stay in touch, stay connected, and make it easier to share our best teaching practices and ideas with each other. We can also use it to discuss educational challenges and solutions, to ask specific questions and get feedback, and to support and encourage each other. What's more, is that it will help to keep us all connected even through the busy times when we usually need each other the most.
Lastly, checking the wiki regularly is the key to its success. Let's make a pledge to check this wiki at least once a month and to make a contribution whenever we have a few minutes to do so. Why not begin now? You can begin now by adding a new page of your own (click on the "add a new page" link). It's easy, it's fun, and it's quick (In the Hawaiian language "wiki" means "fast"). So don't be afraid to experiment with the page - you can't hurt the wiki and the wiki can't hurt you. With your support, we will have a wonderful collection of teaching information, tools, ideas, and suggestions in no time at all. The group's contributions and community support will enrich our lessons, inspire us to try new techniques, motivate us to do our best work, and remind us why "empowering people choosing opportunities" is our passion!
